Communication
The basic human function of sending messages between two or more people, consisting of verbal and nonverbal messages.
Intrapersonal Communication
Self-talk which can be positive or negative.
Interpersonal Communication
Communication between two or more people.
Group Communication
Communication with many people at the same time.
Public Speaking
A unique form of group communication involving a speaker addressing an audience.
Sender
The person who initiates content delivery in the communication process.
Encoding
The process of selecting words, gestures, tone of voice, signs, and symbols used to transmit a message.
Channel
The medium through which a message is transmitted, such as face-to-face, written, email, audiovisual, or telephone.
Feedback
The response from the receiver, which can be verbal, nonverbal, or both.
Verbal Communication
The act of speaking or writing words to send a message.
Nonverbal Communication
The unconscious use of body language when sending a message.
Active Listening
An important aspect of effective communication that involves fully focusing on the speaker.
Assertive Communication
A style of communication that is clear, positive, and focused on the issue at hand.
SBARQ
A standard communication tool meaning Situation, Background, Assessment, Recommendation, Questions.
Therapeutic Communication
Client-centered and goal-directed communication that strengthens the therapeutic relationship.
Empathy
The ability to understand and share the feelings of another, important in therapeutic communication.
Barriers to Communication
Obstacles that hinder effective communication, such as using medical jargon or inappropriate subject changes.
Cultural Sensitivity
The awareness and respect for cultural differences in communication.
Impaired Cognition
A condition where a patient may have difficulty understanding or processing information.
Assertive Style
A communication style characterized by being direct, clear, and respectful to both oneself and others.
