Separation of Powers
Division of government powers among three branches (legislative, executive, judicial) to prevent the concentration of power.
Checks and Balances
the power of each of the three branches of government to limit the actions of others
Federalism (Federal System)
power of government is divided between national government and state government
Limited Government
there are things that government aren’t permitted to do
Popular Sovereignty
the ultimate authority to govern comes from the people’s consent
