Transmission-Based Precautions
Procedures to prevent transmission of infectious agents based on the route (contact, droplet, airborne).
PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
Equipment worn to protect healthcare workers and patients, including gown, mask/respirator, goggles/face shield, and gloves.
Donning PPE
The process of putting on PPE in a prescribed order before entering a patient’s room.
Removing PPE
The process of taking off PPE in a specific order to prevent contaminating yourself or others.
Gown
A protective garment that covers from the neck to the knees with sleeves; worn over clothing and tied at the back or side; must be snug and overlap the back to cover the uniform.
Mask/Respirator
A device covering the nose and mouth, secured with ties, with a snug fit around the nose and chin; may include a metal nose band and must fit under eyeglasses if worn.
Goggles
Eye protection that covers the eyes and is worn as part of PPE when needed.
Face Shield
A transparent shield that protects the face and eyes, used with or without goggles as required.
Gloves
Protective hand coverings that extend to the wrists; removed using an inside-out technique to avoid contamination.
Hand Hygiene
Washing hands with soap and water or using alcohol-based sanitizer before donning and after removing PPE.
BIOHAZARD
Label indicating materials contaminated with biological hazards (blood, body fluids, secretions, excretions).
BIOHAZARD Symbol
The symbol printed on bags and containers to indicate infectious or hazardous biological waste.
Leak-Proof Bag
A plastic bag used to contain contaminated items that must not leak.
Biohazard Waste
Waste contaminated with blood, body fluids, secretions, or excretions that may contain infectious agents.
Laundry Bag
Bag used for soiled linens, lined with a biohazard bag and tied according to policy.
Double-Bagging
Using two bags to contain contents when the outer bag is wet, soiled, or may be contaminated.
Biohazard Specimen Bag
A biohazard-labeled bag used to transport specimens to the laboratory.
Bagging Items
Process of placing soiled items in leak-proof bags, salting and sealing them, and using cuffs on clean bags to protect hands.
Collecting Specimens
Process of collecting specimens (blood, body fluids, secretions, excretions) with proper labeling, containment, and transport in biohazard bags while avoiding contamination.
Transporting Persons
Procedures for moving patients on Transmission-Based Precautions, including PPE, barriers, and disinfection of transport equipment; minimize exposure to others.
Isolation Precautions
Another term for Transmission-Based Precautions, including measures to prevent spread of infection.
