Vertebrates
Animals that have a vertebral column or backbone.
Chordata
An animal phylum that includes all vertebrates.
Fish
Vertebrates that live in water and have fins and gills.
Amphibians
Vertebrates that live on land but return to water to breed and have smooth, moist skin.
Reptiles

Invertebrates
Lacking a vertebral column or backbone.
Arthropods
The largest group in the animal kingdom; segmented animals with jointed legs and an exoskeleton.
Crustaceans
Arthropods with two body regions (abdomen and cephalothorax), a chalky exoskeleton, and gills for breathing.
Myriapods
Arthropods having many body segments with one or two pairs of legs on each segment.
Centipedes
Fast-moving carnivores with one pair of legs per segment that can paralyze their prey.
Millipedes
Slow-moving herbivores with two pairs of legs per segment that feed on leaf litter.
Insects
Arthropods with three body regions (head, thorax, and abdomen), spiracles for breathing, and waterproof cuticles.
Arachnids
Arthropods with two body regions (cephalothorax and abdomen), spinnerets for producing webs, and poison fangs.
Monocotyledons
Flowering plants with one cotyledon in the seed, long and narrow leaves, and flower parts in multiples of three.
Dicotyledons
Flowering plants with two cotyledons in the seed, broad leaves with branching veins, and flower parts in multiples of four or five.
