What is filial imprinting?
The process by which young birds attach to and follow their parent or another moving object during a sensitive period.
Example of filial imprinting in Greylag Geese?
Goslings hatched by mothers imprinted on them; incubator-hatched goslings imprinted on the first moving object they saw.
What cues are important in duckling imprinting?
Auditory cues—ducklings prefer maternal calls of their own species, even without prior exposure.
What happens if ducklings are muted before hatching?
They do not show species-specific call preference, showing prenatal auditory experience is essential.
