John Steinbeck, an American author, wrote Of Mice and Men, which explores themes of friendship and dreams during the Great Depression.
Feelings of loneliness and isolation were central to the plot. Which characters were lonely? Why? What does this tell us about the loneliness?
Crooks: Nobody talks or hangs out with because he’s black
Candy: He had to kill his dog because they thought the dog was “useless“ because without his dog, he feels “useless“ and he thinks they’re gonna get rid of him.
Curley’s Wife: Nobody wants to talk to her and when she does talk to people, they think she’s flirting

Describe Candy
Candy: An old range worker who has lost a hand in a working accident and now works as a swamper, or cleaner on the ranch. He feels he’s “useless“ feels he has “no value as a person”
Describe Crooks
Crooks: The only black man, he is lonely and isolated because of that, making him bitter towards the others. A sharp-written, lean face with black wrinkles, he got his name from his crooked back.
