Candy: He had to kill his dog because they thought the dog was “useless“ because without his dog, he feels “useless“ and he thinks they’re gonna get rid of him.

Curley’s Wife: Nobody wants to talk to her and when she does talk to people, they think she’s flirting

Candy: An old range worker who has lost a hand in a working accident and now works as a swamper, or cleaner on the ranch. He feels he’s “useless“ feels he has “no value as a person”
