Inhalation/Inspiration
Breathing in
Exhalation/Expiration
Breathing out
Boyle's Law
The volume of a gas varies inversely with its pressure.
Inhalation
Contracting respiratory muscles increase volume and decrease pressure, causing air to flow into lungs.
Exhalation
Muscles relax, decreasing volume and increasing pressure, causing air to flow out of lungs.
Normal Inspiration
Diaphragm and external intercostal muscles contract, increasing volume and decreasing pressure, leading to air flowing into the lungs.
Normal Expiration
Passive process where inspiratory muscles relax, chest and lungs recoil, decreasing volume and increasing pressure, causing air to flow out of the lungs.
Forced Inspiration
Sternocleidomastoid, scalene, and pectoralis minor muscles raise the sternum and ribs.
Forced Expiration
Internal intercostal and abdominal muscles contract, pulling ribs down and forcing the diaphragm upwards.
Airway Resistance
Resistance to airflow in respiratory passageways.
Surfactant
Decreases surface tension, allowing for easier lung inflation.
Lung Compliance
Effort required to stretch lungs.
