Spinal Cord

A large cord running through the vertebral foramen of the vertebrae containing various nuclei and filled with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

Central Canal

The hole in the middle of the spinal cord that is filled with cerebrospinal fluid (CSF).

Dorsal Horns

Sites of sensory nuclei in the spinal cord, specifically for both somatic and visceral senses.

Ventral Horns

Sites of somatic motor nuclei in the spinal cord.

Conus Medullaris

The cone-shaped inferior end of the spinal cord.

Cauda Equina

Bundle of nerve fibers below the conus medullaris, resembling a horse's tail.

Medulla Oblongata

The most inferior part of the brainstem, connecting the brain to the spinal cord.

Pons

The bulging area just superior to the medulla oblongata and anterior to the cerebellum.

Cerebellum

The posterior 'little brain' that is inferior to the occipital lobe.

The superior superficial layer of the brain, characterized by its highly convoluted structure.

Frontal Lobe

The area of the brain cortex located anterior to the central sulcus, including the prefrontal cortex.

Postcentral Gyrus

The bump just posterior to the central sulcus; it is the site of the primary somatosensory cortex.

Cingulate Gyrus

Part of the limbic system; located above the corpus callosum and below the cerebral cortex, involved in emotional regulation.

Optic Chiasm

The cross-shaped area where the two optic nerves join, crucial for visual processing.
