Diverse Native Societies
Native societies in the Americas were diverse, with different societies based on their environments.
Pueblo People
Farmers in present-day Utah and Colorado known for their advanced irrigation systems and cliff dwellings.
Great Basin and Great Plains People
Nomadic hunter-gatherers, such as the Ute people, who lived in small egalitarian kinship bands.
Chumash People
Native people in present-day California who built villages and participated in regional trade networks.
Chinook Peoples
Native people in the Pacific Northwest who lived in plank houses and were similar to the Chumash.
Iroquois People
Farmers in the Northeast who lived communally in longhouses constructed from timber.
Cahokia
A large civilization in the Mississippi River Valley with a centralized government led by chieftains.
European Political Unification
European kingdoms were unifying and developing stronger, centralized states governed by monarchs.
Trading Post Empire
Trading posts established around Africa, gaining a strong foothold in the Indian Ocean trade network.
Maritime
Having to do with the sea.
Columbian Exchange
The transfer of people, animals, plants, and diseases from the East to the West and vice versa.
Feudalism
A system where peasants lived and worked on a noble's land in exchange for protection.
Capitalism
An economic system based on private ownership and free exchange.
Joint-Stock Companies
Limited liability organizations where investors pool money to fund ventures, sharing profits and risks.
Encomienda System
An economic system where Spaniards forced natives to work on plantations and extract resources.
Casta System
A social class system introduced by the Spanish in the Americas based on racial ancestry.
Peninsulares
Spaniards born in Spain (the Iberian Peninsula).
Criollos (Creoles)
Spaniards born in the Americas.
Mestizos
Those born of Spanish and Native American blood.
Mulattos
Those born of Spanish and African blood.
