the five regions of the spine are called
cervical ( 8 nerves 7 vertebrae) , thoracic (12 nerves), lumbar ( 5 nerves), sacral ( 5 nerves), coccygeal ( 1 nerve 4 vertebrae)
dermatome
the area of skin innervated by a single nerve root
a nerve root is
axon of motor and sensory neurons which are combined into spinal nerves in the PNS
cauda equina is
a rare, medical emergency caused by severe compression of nerve roots at the base of the spine
Where are cell bodies for sensory spinal neurons located?
dorsal root ganglia - outside of the actual spinal cord
Where are cell bodies for motor spinal neurons located?
WITHIN the spinal cord (and brainstem, for cranial nerves)
reflexes are
Subconscious automatic stimulus - response mechanisms ( found in humans)
four examples of reflexes are
patellar tendon reflex, grasp reflex, corneal reflex, and plantar response
ANS’s function is to ..
innervate involuntary structures (smooth muscle, glands, etc..)
The major two divisions of ANS are
sympathetic ( flight and fight) and parasympathetic (calming)
the three meningeal layers are
arachnoid mater, dura mater, and pia mater
falx cerebri is
sagittal and is between the cerebral hemispheres
Tentorium cerebelli is found
between the cerebrum and cerebellum
subdural’s upper and lower boundaries are
arachnoid and dura mater
epidural’s lower and upper boundaries are
dura mater and skull or vertebrae
subarachnoid upper and lower boundaries are
brain; foramen magnum to second sacral vertebrae
The four ventricles of the brain are
two lateral ventricles, third ventricle, fourth ventricle
CFS (cerebral spinal fluid) is
Circulates around the brain, through the ventricles and through the subarachnoid space.
The circle of willis is
found on the base of the cerebrum connecting the internal carotid and vertebral arteries
