Xylem
Vascular tissue that conducts water and minerals, containing tube-shaped cells called tracheids.
Phloem
Vascular tissue that distributes sugars, amino acids, and other organic products.
Roots
Plant organs that anchor plants, absorb minerals and water, and store carbohydrates.
Stems
Plant organs consisting of an alternating system of nodes and internodes.
Leaves
Plant organs that intercept light, exchange gases, dissipate heat, and defend the plant.
Dermal Tissue
Plant tissue that forms a protective outer layer.
Vascular Tissue
Plant tissue that transports water, minerals, and sugars.
Ground Tissue
Plant tissue that includes cells specialized for storage, photosynthesis, and support.
Indeterminate Growth
Plant growth that occurs throughout the plant's life.
Determinate Growth
Plant growth that ceases at a certain size.
Apical Meristems
Located at the tips of roots and shoots, these elongate during primary growth.
Root Cap
Covers and protects the apical meristem as the root pushes through the soil.
Lateral Meristems
Add thickness to woody plants during secondary growth.
Secondary Growth
Process in plants where lateral meristems add thickness to woody plants.
Vascular Cambium
Meristem that makes secondary vascular tissue.
Cork Cambium
Meristem that makes cork cells that accumulate to the exterior of the plant.
Secondary Xylem
Type of vascular tissue produced during secondary growth.
Secondary Phloem
Type of vascular tissue produced during secondary growth.
Cork Cells
Cells that accumulate to the exterior of the plant from the cork cambium.
