Define Genocide
Any acts committed with intent to destroy, in whole or in part, a national, ethnical, racial, or religious group.
Who is Raphael Lemkin?
The Polish jurist who coined the term 'Genocide' by combining 'genos' (race, tribe) and 'cide' (killing).
Define Cultural genocide?
Also known as ethnocide. The destruction of a culture without killing its bearers, including acts that aim to destroy a group's language, religion, or culture.
What is the UN Genocide Convention?
The 1948 treaty that defined genocide and outlined acts that constitute genocide.
What does annihilation mean?
The act of completely destroying or obliterating a group.
What is retributive Genocide?
Actions taken by states or entities against groups in retaliation for their actions.
What is a developmental genocide?
Genocides that occur during the implementation of development projects, often oppressing local populations.
How is genocide distinguished from other forms of political violence?
Genocide is characterized by the intention to annihilate a group, distinct from other political violence.
What are the four following acts that can consittute a genocide?
(a) Killing members of the group;
(b) Causing serious bodily or mental harm to members of the group;
(c) Deliberately inflicting on the group conditions of life calculated to bring about its physical destruction in whole or in part;
(d) Imposing measures intended to prevent births within the group;
(e) Forcibly transferring children of the group to another group.
What is genocide in the context of a struggle between a state and an indigenous group?
Often defined by governments as insurgents, separatists, or terrorists, resisting nations tend to consider themselves freedom fighters or people seeking self-determination. Many of these groups are outnumbered and outgunned by the state, so they resort to guerrilla tactics or civil disobedience.
