Dual Court Process
One court deals with state laws while the other deals with federal laws
Jurisdiction
The authority of a court to rule on certain cases (3 types)
Plaintiff
A person who brings a case against another in court of law
Defendant
An individual, company or institution sued or accused in a court of law
Substantive Due Process
Law is reasonable
Procedural Due Process
Enforcing the law must be reasonable
Equity Law
Fair remedies beyond monetary (financial) damages
Injunction
An authoritative warning or order
Prosecution
The institution and conducting of legal proceedings against someone in respect of a criminal charge
Opinion
A written explanation of the SC decision
Grand Jury
A group that hears charges against a suspect and decides whether there is sufficient evidence to bring person to trial
Indictment
A formal accusation charging a person with a crime
Petit Jury
A trial jury of 6-12 people that weighs evidence presented at a trail and renders a verdict
Senatorial Courtesy
Senate approves a pres. choice for a job only if senator from same state agrees (judges for Circuit Courts) and District Courts
Precedent
Previous court decision that is used as a guide for deciding future cases
