Ribosomes
Synthesize (build) proteins
Vacuole
Storage for cell (water, proteins)
Cytoplasm
Gel-like fluid, mostly water, fills space between organelles and helps transports materials in the cell
Skeletal System
Structures: Bones, cartilage, ligaments, tendons
Functions: Supports body; protects internal organs; allows movement; stores minerals; produces blood cells
Integumentary System
Structures: Skin, hair, nails, sweat glands, oil glands
Functions: Guards against infection and injury; helps regulate body temperature
Muscular System
Structures: Skeletal muscle, smooth muscle, cardiac muscle
Functions: With skeletal system, produces movement; helps circulate blood and move food through the digestive system
Nucleus
Contains genetic material (DNA, RNA - instructions for cells
Lysosome
Removes Waste
Cell Membrane
Semi permeable to allow some things into the cell, and keep other things out (plants also have a cell wall to give them structure)
Mitochondria
"Powerhouse of the cell" - converts sugar to ATP energy by cellular respiration (plants use chloroplasts)
Circulatory System
Structures: Heart, blood vessels
Functions: Transports oxygen, nutrients, and wastes; fights infection; helps regulate body temperature
Respiratory System
Structures: Nose, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs
Functions: Brings in oxygen needed by cells; removes carbon dioxide from the body
Digestive System
Structures: Mouth, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, liver, pancreas, large intestine, rectum
Functions: Breaks down food; absorbs nutrients; removes food waste
Excretory System
Structures: Skin, lungs, liver, kidneys, urinary bladder, urethra
Functions: Removes waste products from the body
Nervous System
Structures: Brain, spinal cord, nerves
Functions: Controls body's responses to changes in inside and outside environments
Endocrine System
Structures: Glands, such as the thyroid, pancreas, adrenals, ovaries, testes, and others
Functions: Controls growth, development, and energy processes; helps maintain homeostasis
Reproductive System
Structures: In males: testes, ducts, urethra, penis; in females: ovaries, ducts, uterus, vagina
Functions: Produces and delivers sex cells; in females, nurtures and protects developing embryo
