Conservative
Favors traditional American values, respect for authority, law and order, and national defense.
Liberal
Also known as Progressive; favors an active government role in regulating the economy and promoting equality.
Libertarian
Favors very limited government, promotes individual freedom that is only limited when it impedes on another person’s rights.
Political Ideology
A consistent set of values and beliefs about the purpose and scope of government.
Political Socialization
The process by which individuals develop political beliefs, values, opinions, and behaviors.
Individualism
The belief that each person is responsible for themselves and should make their own decisions.
Equality of Opportunity
The belief that all people should be given an equal chance to succeed.
Public Opinion Poll
A survey of public opinion using a sample of the population.
Benchmark Polls
The first poll taken by a campaign to gauge where a candidate stands before campaigning.
Tracking Polls
Continuous polls used to monitor a candidate’s daily rise or decline in support.
Exit Polls
Polls conducted as voters leave polling places to predict election outcomes and analyze voter behavior.
Margin of Error
The percent of results that could be the result of chance variation in polling results.

A polling error arising from using a sample of the population.

The belief that the government should encourage economic growth by cutting taxes.
