Affect

Definition: Underlying experience of feeling, emotion, or mood, encompassing a wide range of emotional states

Characteristics/Facts:

  • subjective

  • emotion or feeling

Examples: positive affect (experiencing joy), negative affect (feeling sadness), mixed affect (experiencing a combination of emotions

Non-examples: screaming when you see a spider or jumping up and down when you are excited (these are outward expression of emotion)

Definition: A psychological process where individuals evaluate and interpret events or situations to determine their significance and potential impact

Characteristics/Facts:

Examples: A college rejection level is initially negative; then, individuals will consider coping mechanisms to determine if it is a major setback ora temporary inconvenience

Non-examples: Getting a rejection letter then ignoring it and never figuring out what it means to you
