Uropathogenic [UPEC]
common cause of UTIs
Meningitis-sepsis [MNEC]
causes neonatal meningitis; is positive for the K1 antigen, can be intestinal
Enterotoxigenic [ETEC]
Produces heat labile enterotoxin (LT) and a heat stable enterotoxin (ST). ST over activates cyclic GMP, decreases absorption of sodium which increases water in the gut and causes watery Diarrhea. LT takes over cyclic AMP which increases chloride secretion in the gut and increase water eflux of the gut, also causes water diarrhea, causes travelers diarrhea. Mimics Vibrio cholera but is not.
Enteroinvasive [EIEC]
Causes watery to bloody diarrhea as a result of intrusion of cells in the colon, causes dysenteries, mimics shigellosis. Very bloody with abdominal pain
Enteroaggregative [EAEC]
Stool does not contain blood or WBC; associated with ARG genes.
Enteropathogenic [EPEC]
No exotoxins, causes prolonged non-bloody diarrhea in children.
Enterohemorrhagic [STEC]
Causes hemorrhagic diarrhea and hemolytic-uremic syndrome (HUS), produces a Shiga-like toxin that causes dysentery, epithelial damage, can cause anemia, kidneys can shut down. Can get diarrhea, malaise, and fever.
