Used to talk about past events that began and ended in the past

Formation of passé composé

Formed with present tense of avoir + past participle of main verb

Regular -er verbs past participle

Replace -er with -é (ex: parler → parlé)

Regular -ir verbs past participle

Replace -ir with -i (ex: finir → fini)

Regular -re verbs past participle

Replace -re with -u (ex: vendre → vendu)

Avoir conjugation (present tense)

Structure of passé composé

Subject + present tense of avoir + past participle

Example sentence

J’ai mangé une pomme. (I ate an apple.)

Negation in passé composé

Ne/n’ and pas go around avoir (ex: Je n’ai pas étudié.)

Question formation in passé composé

Inversion: Avez-vous étudié? / Est-ce que tu as étudié?

Irregular past participles

appris (apprendre), eu (avoir), bu (boire), compris (comprendre), dit (dire), écrit (écrire), été (être), fait (faire), lu (lire), mis (mettre), pris (prendre), vu (voir)
