Psychoanalytic Approach
Refers to literary criticism which, in method, concept, theory, or form, is influenced by the tradition of psychoanalysis begun by Sigmund Freud. Adopts the methods of "reading" employed by Freud and later theorists to interpret texts.
It argues that literary texts, like dreams, express the secret unconscious desires and anxieties of the author, that a literary work is a manifestation of the author's own neuroses.
Biographical Approach
A form of Literary criticism which analyzes a writer's biography to show the relationship between the author's life and their works of literature.
The goal is understanding why the author wrote what he or she wrote.

Structuralist/Formalist Approach
Holds that the true meaning of a text can be determined only by analyzing the literary elements of the text and understanding how these elements work together to form up a cohesive whole.
Historical Approach
Involves the understanding of the historical and culutural conditions that influence the production of the literary work.
Moralist Approach
To study literature from the moral/intellectual perspective is therefore to determine whether a work conveys a lesson or message and whether it can help readers lead better lives and improve their understanding of the world.
Feminist Approach
Focuses on female representation in literature, paying attention to female points of view, concerns and values.
Reader-Response Approach
Argues that the meaning of a text is dependent upon the readers' response to it. hence, two different readers may derive completely different interpretations of the same literary text. TEXT + READER = MEANING
Marxist Approach
Examines the relationship of a literary product to the actual economic and social reality. It tries to understand how POWER, POLITICS, and MONEY play a role in literary text and how these elements impact the society and characters in the text.
