1

Why does graphite conduct electricity?

In graphite each carbon atom is covalently bonded to three others. This leaves one electron from each atom free (delocalised)to move through the structure and carry the current.

2

Why is graphite slippery/used as a lubricant?

The carbon atoms form layers which have weak intermolecular forces between them that allow the layers to slide over each other.

New cards
3

Why is diamond hard?

Diamond is a giant covalent structure. Each carbon atom is covalently bonded to four others in a rigid network. takes a lot of energy to break.

New cards
4

Why does (carbon dioxide, water, propanone, etc) have low melting/boiling points?

have low melting point because it is a simple molecule with weak intermolecular bonds between molecules that require little energy to break

New cards
5

Explain the trend in reactivity of group 1 metals with water.

Outer shell electron further away from the nucleus Outer shell electron held less tightly by the nucleus Outer shell electron more easily lost

New cards
6

why are ionic compounds solid at room temperature?

Strong electrostatic forces of attraction between oppositely charged ions require a lot of energy to overcome

New cards
7

Why do ionic compounds conduct electricity when molten or in solution but not when solid?

When liquid the ions are free to move and carry the charge through the structure. In solids the ions are in fixed positions and can not move

New cards
8

Why do covalent substances not conduct electricity?

They contain no delocalised electrons They contain no ions So there is nothing to carry the charge
