Spread of CPP
Nkrumah Impact: Founded CPP and gained support from workers, religious groups, etc by spreading their message via newspapers and other journalistic mediums.
Rejection of Coussey Report
Nkrumah dismissed the report which advocated for greater African representation in government but not self-rule as fraudulent an demanded a new constitution that allowed self rule.
Positive Action Campaign (1950)
Launched non-violent resistance against British colonial rule starting January of 1950
Ghana Independence (1957)
Happened March 6th 1957. Economy had potential and government seemed to be competent. Nation had huge reserves from the cocoa boom of the 1950’s.
All African People’s Conference (1958)
Many important African leaders met and went on to push for total independence.
Nkrumaism
His ideology for new Africa without Europe. He wanted o make ghana a modern socialist state and make Africa a world superpower.
Corruption in Ghana
Nation dealt with many issues bc there were many corrupt officials who profited off bribes from foreign contractors. The authoritarian goverment created corruption and social imbalance.
Volta River Project
Provided electricity, but increased debt for nation and opposition against Nkrumah.
7 year plan and removal of Nkrumah
Nkrumah’s 7 year plan failed because he was removed as leader in 1966 after a military coup.
Education Act (1961)
Government expanded education to support industrial workforce needs.
Avoidance of Discrimination Act (1957)
Banned opposition and imprisoned critics
Preventive Detention Act (1958)
Allowed imprisonment without trial; therefore judiciary power decreased.
Evolution of Party System (1964)
Ghana becomes one party state and Nkrumah is named president for life.
