Appendicular Skeleton
Limbs and girdles attaching them to the axial skeleton, enabling movement and articulation.
Pectoral Girdle
Clavicle and scapula; attaches the upper limb to the axial skeleton.
Clavicle
S-shaped collar bone, articulating with the sternum and scapula.
Scapula
Site for muscle attachments; connects upper limb to the axial skeleton.
Upper Limb Regions
Arm, forearm, wrist, palm, and fingers.
Humerus
Largest upper limb bone; articulates with glenoid cavity, radius, and ulna.
Ulna
Medial forearm bone; articulates with humerus and carpals.
Radius
Lateral forearm bone; articulates with humerus and carpals.
Carpals
Eight bones of the wrist; form carpal tunnel.
Metacarpals
Five bones of the palm.
Phalanges (hand)
Three bones per finger, two in the thumb.
Pelvic Girdle
Two coxal bones; supports vertebral column, protects viscera, attaches lower limbs.
Coxal Bone Landmarks
Articulates with pubic symphysis and sacrum; includes acetabulum and obturator foramen.
Ilium
Largest part of hip bone; site for muscle attachment.
Ischium
Inferior, posterior hip bone part.
Pubis
Anterior, inferior hip bone part.
False Pelvis
Superior to pelvic brim.
True Pelvis
Inferior to pelvic brim; includes pelvic inlet and outlet.
Male Pelvis
Larger, heavier, narrower pelvis.
Female Pelvis
Wider, shallower pelvis.
Lower Limb Regions
Thigh, kneecap, leg, ankle, foot, and toes.
Femur
Longest, heaviest bone; articulates with acetabulum, tibia, and patella.
Patella
Sesamoid bone anterior to knee joint.
Tibia
Medial leg bone; articulates with femur.
Fibula
Lateral leg bone; articulates with talus.
Tarsals
Seven ankle bones; talus articulates with tibia and fibula, calcaneus forms heel.
Metatarsals
Five foot bones.
Phalanges (foot)
Three bones per toe, two in the big toe.
