Why do you want to work for Northern?
I want to work for Northern because it plays a big role in keeping people connected across the North of England. I’m interested in engineering and how trains work, and an apprenticeship would allow me to learn practical skills while contributing to maintaining safe and reliable trains. I also like that Northern invests in training apprentices and developing their careers.
Why did you choose a rail engineering apprenticeship?
I chose a rail engineering apprenticeship because I enjoy understanding how mechanical and electrical systems work. Trains are complex machines that need regular maintenance and problem-solving, which is something I find interesting. An apprenticeship is a good path for me because I learn best through hands-on experience while also gaining qualifications.
Tell us about a time you solved a problem
A time I solved a problem was during a project where I created a sketch and CAD model. After finishing it, I realised some of the dimensions didn’t meet the design specifications.I went back to my sketch, found where the measurements were off, and corrected them before updating the CAD model. I then checked it again to make sure everything met the requirements. This taught me the importance of accuracy and checking my work carefully throughout the design process.
How do you make sure you work safely
Safety is very important in engineering because mistakes can affect people’s safety. I make sure to follow instructions carefully, use the correct equipment, and double-check my work. I also ask questions if I’m unsure about something so I don’t take unnecessary risks.
Tell us about a time you worked in a team
A time I worked in a team was during my Duke of Edinburgh expedition. We had to work together to navigate, set up camp, and manage our time.At one point, we fell behind schedule, so as a team we discussed what needed to change and split responsibilities more effectively, like sharing navigation and setting up camp quicker. By communicating and supporting each other, we were able to get back on track and complete the expedition successfully. This experience showed me the importance of teamwork, communication, and staying organised under pressure.
What do you know about the role?
From what I understand, the apprenticeship involves learning how to maintain and repair trains so they stay safe and reliable. This includes inspecting parts, identifying faults, and carrying out maintenance in depots. It also involves learning both mechanical and electrical systems while working with experienced engineers.
What are your strengths?
One of my strengths is attention to detail. When working on technical tasks I try to check everything carefully to make sure it’s correct. This is important in engineering because small mistakes can affect how equipment works.
Another one of my strengths is my reliability. If I’m given a task, I make sure it gets done properly and on time.
What is your biggest weakness?
One weakness I’ve noticed is that sometimes I can overthink things because I want to make sure I get them right, so I’ve started setting time limits to stay efficient.
Another of my weaknesses is that I used to find it difficult to ask for help, as I preferred to try and figure things out on my own. While this helped me develop independence, I realised it could slow me down in a team environment. To improve, I’ve started to ask for input earlier when I’m unsure, which helps me learn faster and work more efficiently with others.
Do you have any questions for us?
1.Most enjoyable thing about working there?
2.What is the most important/valued trait you look for in an apprentice?
3. What opportunities are there after completing the apprenticeship?
