What are three functions of the circulatory system?
Transporting oxygen and nutrients to body tissue
Removes waste products (EX: Carbon Dioxide)
Helps regulate body temp
What's the function of a heart
Pump blood throughout the body
What's the function of the arteries
they are blood vessels that distribute oxygen (rich blood) to your entire body
What are veins?
They are blood vessels that collect oxygen (poor blood) and return it to your heart
What are capillaries?
delicate blood vessels that deliver nutrients and oxygen to cells throughout your body
What's the function of red blood cells?
They transport oxygen from lungs to body tissue
What's the function of white blood cells?
they help your body fight infections and diseases
What's the function of platelets
they are very large cells in your bone marrow that help form blood clots slow or to stop bleeding and help wounds heal.
What's the function of plasma
transports blood cells, nutrients, hormones, and waste products through out the body
Explain the difference between oxygenated blood and deoxygenated blood
Oxygenated blood is rich in oxygen, carrying it from the lungs to the body cells for energy production. Deoxygenated blood however, has delivered oxygen to the body and now carries more carbon dioxide.
What are the three distinct layers of the heart?
epicardium, myocardium, endocardium
What's the epicardium?
The outermost protective later of the heart that provides protection and contains the nerves and blood vessels that supply the heart.
What's the Myocardium
Makes up the thick middle layer of the heart that is primarily composed of cardiac muscle cells.
What's the Endocardium?
It the innermost lining of the heart, a thin smooth layer that covers the heart chambers and valves.
what are the two circulatory patterns blood follows in the body?
Systemic circulation and pulmonary circulation
Describe systemic circulation
Systemic circulation distributes oxygenated blood from the heart to the rest of the body and returns deoxygenated blood to the heart.
Describe pulmonary circulation
Pulmonary circulation involves the heart and lungs, where blood picks up oxygen and releases carbon dioxide.
The left atrium carries what type of blood?
Oxygenated Blood
The right atrium carries what type of blood?
Deoxygenated blood
The left ventricle carries what type of blood?
Oxygenated blood
The right ventricle carries what type of blood?
Deoxygenated blood
Aorta carries what type of blood
Oxygenated blood
The Pulmonary Artery carries what type of blood?
Deoxygenated blood
Superior Vena Cava carries what type of blood?
Deoxygenated blood
Inferior vena cava carries what type of blood?
deoxygenated blood
Which artery is the only artery that handles deoxygenated blood?
pulmonary artery
What vein carries blood coming from the upper body to the heart
Superior vena cava
What vein carries blood coming from the lower body to the heart?
Inferior vena cava
Describe the cause and effect plus symptoms of Coronary Heart Disease
Its caused by build up of plaque in the colonary arteries which leads to reduced blood flow and potential heart attack or sudden death. Symptoms: Chest pain, pain in arms, shoulders, jaw, or back.
Describe the cause and effect plus symptoms of Valve disease
Occurs when one or more of the hearts for valves malfunction, which can be caused by birth defects, aging, infections,we and other heart conditions. This could lead to heart failure, irregular heart beats, and other heart conditions.
Symptoms: shortness of breath, chest pain and fatigue
Describe the cause and effect plus symptoms of Arrhythmia
This is an irregular heartbeat which can be caused by problems with the hearts electrical system, certain medical, conditions or life style choices. This can cause fatigue, sweating, and chest pain.
What are five healthy heart practices?
Exercise
Eat Healthy
Healthy weight
Manage stress
Quit smoking
What is blood pressure
The force of blood pushing against your arteries
How is blood pressure measured?
Measured as two numbers systolic and diastolic pressure.
What does the systolic number indicate about blood pressure?
Highest pressure in your arteries when your heart contracts.
What does the diastolic number indicate about blood pressure?
pressure in your artieres when your heart is resting between beats
What is a healthy blood pressure? Systolic Diatolic
Less than 120mmHG ; Less than 80mmHg
