BSL 1 and 2
Biosafety Levels indicating the safety precautions necessary for laboratories handling certain microorganisms.
PPE (Personal Protective Equipment)
Gear like lab coats, goggles, gloves, and masks that ensure safety in the laboratory.
•Over 1.7 million
nosocomial infections occur every year.
Roughly 99,000 deaths
result from nosocomial infections.
Nosocomial infections
Infections acquired in a hospital setting, often due to the spread of pathogens.
Transient Flora
Temporary microorganisms on the skin that can cause diseases and are easily removable. (temporary)
Resident Flora
Microorganisms that permanently inhabit the skin and protect against pathogens. (always present)
Glo-Germ
A lotion used to test handwashing effectiveness by showing fluorescence under UV light.
Culture Medium
Nutrient sources allowing the growth of microorganisms in lab settings.
Selective media
Culturing media that inhibit some microbes while promoting others.
Total Magnification
The product of the ocular lens magnification and the objective lens magnification.
Resolution
The ability to distinguish two separate objects.
Working Distance
The space between the objective lens and the slide, which decreases with increased magnification.
Parfocal
A feature that keeps the image in focus when switching between different objective lenses.
Prokaryotic Cells
Cells that are small, unicellular, and lack a true nucleus, examples include bacteria.
Eukaryotic Cells
Cells that are larger, may be unicellular or multicellular, and contain a true nucleus.
Kingdom Fungi
Non-photosynthesizing decomposers, including molds and yeasts.
Ubiquity of Microbes
The concept that microorganisms are found everywhere in the environment.
