Aqueous humor
A watery, clear solution that fills the anterior cavity of the eye
Bulbus oculi
The eyeball
C-1 and C-2
The first two cervical vertebrae; C1 is the atlas and C2 is the axis
Calvaria
The upper part of the skull
Cavernous sinus
A space, or cavity, on either side of the dorsum sellae of the sphenoid bone
Condyle of the mandible
Rounded projection on the ramus of the mandible that articulates with the mandibular fossa of the temporal bone
Ethmoid sinus
Air-filled cavity in the ethmoid bone; one of the paranasal sinuses
External auditory canal
Passageway in the external ear that transmits sound vibrations to the tympanic membrane
Frontal bone
The bone of the cranium that forms the forehead
Frontal lobe
The portion of the cerebrum that is located in the anterior cranial fossa and is anterior to the central sulcus
Frontal sinus
Air-filled cavity in the frontal bone; one of the paranasal sinuses
Mandible
Bone of the lower jaw
Masseter muscle
The muscle that acts to close the jaw, a muscle of mastication
Mastoid process
The projection on the temporal bone located posterior to the ear
Maxillae
Bones that form the upper jaw
Maxillary sinus
Cavity within the maxillary bone; one of the paranasal sinuses
Nasal conchae
Bony ridges that project medially into the nasal cavity from the lateral walls of the nasal cavity
Nasal septum
Partition in the center of the nasal cavity; formed by the vomer bone and the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone
Occipital bone
The bone that forms the back of the skull and the base of the cranium
Optic chiasma
Region, just anterior to the pituitary gland, where the right and left optic nerves meet and some fibers cross over to the opposite side
Optic nerves
Bundles of nerve fibers that carry visual impulses from the retina of the eye to the optic chiasma
Optic tracts
Bundles of fibers in the visual pathway between the optic chiasma and the thalamus
Paranasal sinuses
Air-filled cavities in the ethmoid, sphenoid, frontal, and maxillary bones that are lined with mucous membrane and connect with the nasal cavity
Parietal bone
The bone of the cranium immediately posterior to the frontal bone; forms the top of the head
Petrous ridge
Rough region of the temporal bone that extends medially toward the center of the cranial vault
Ramus of the mandible
Portion of the mandible that projects superiorly from the body of the mandible
Sigmoid sinus
S-shaped channel that passes through the petrous portion of the temporal bone and drains blood and cerebrospinal fluid into the internal jugular vein
Sphenoid bone
The butterfly-shaped bone that extends from one side of the cranium to the other and forms a portion of the cranial floor
Sphenoid sinus
Air-filled cavity in the sphenoid bone; one of the paranasal sinuses
Temporal bone
The bone that forms the side of the cranium and surrounds the ear
Temporal lobe
Most lateral portion of the cerebrum; separated from the parietal lobe of the cerebrum by the lateral fissure
Vitreous humor
Jellylike substance that fills the posterior cavity of the eye, between the lens and the retina; also called vitreous body
Zygoma
Bone that forms the prominence of the cheek; zygomatic bone
Zygomatic arch
Bridge or span on the lateral side of the skull; formed by the zygomatic process of the temporal bone and the temporal process of the zygomatic bone
