What is amoebiasis? What organism causes it? Is it aerobic or anaerobic?

  • trophozoite = motile and active form

    • obligate anerobes

    • dies quickly outside. the body = symptoms

  • Cysts = dormant, hary, inactive

    • form in soil/ water form fecal cntmaination

What is amoebic dysentery? How are the symptoms different form bacteria dysentery? 

  • causes by Entamoeba histolytica = blood/mucus in the stool 

  • Different = generally lower fever than abterial dysentery

  • Diagnosis = Fecal smears look for ameoba ( free-living or cycts) 

    • suspected cases confirm with blood test 

  • Treatment = antiprotozoals = metronidazole: attacks anaerobic organisms

    • And hydration

  • Infect = small intestine and colonize and block absorption of fluids and nutrients

What are the symptoms of giardia? How is it diagnosed? 

  • most = no symptoms 

    • Diarrhea, fatigue/ weight loss, stomach cramps, gas, bloating, greasy, floating foul-smelling stool, fever = rare

  • Diagnosis = feca smear/ string test

  • string test = swallow capsule w/ string attached, allow capsule yo pass infection, pull string back and examine for giardia.
