1. Physical layer

Cables, fiber, the signals themselves

• potential troubleshooting: loopback tests, testing cables, swapping adapter cards, etc.

2. Data Link/mac address/switching layer

Used to communicate between 2 devices on the network

• Ethernet frames, NICs, MAC addresses, etc.

3. Networking/routing/IP layer

Using routes to determine how to forward traffic

• Anything related to IP addressing, subnet masks, routing, packets, etc.

4. Transport layer

Responsible for getting info from one side of the network to another

• UDP and TCP

5. Session layer

Creating tunnels so devices can send/receive data

• Starting/stopping/restarting sessions

6. Presentation layer

Puts data into a human-readable format

• Character encoding/application encryption/decryption

• SSL/TLS

7. Application layer

Layers that we can see on our screen/interacting with an application

• HTTP, HTTPS, FPT, DNS, POP3, IMAP, etc.
