Square root
A value that, when multiplied by itself, gives the original number. (Example: The square root of 9 is 3).
Integer
A whole number that can be positive, negative, or zero (no decimals or fractions).
Variable
A symbol (usually a letter like x or y) used to represent a number we do not know yet.
Solve for x
The process of finding the specific value of the variable that makes an equation true.
Bracket
Symbols like ( ) or [ ] used to group parts of a mathematical expression together.
Like term
Terms whose variables (and their exponents) are the same. (Example: 2x and 5x are like terms).
Indices
Also known as exponents or powers; they tell you how many times to multiply a number by itself.
Subtraction
The operation of taking one quantity away from another to find the difference.
Linear expression
A mathematical statement where the highest power of the variable is 1 (it creates a straight line when graphed).
Equivalent to
Having the same value or meaning, even if written in a different form.
Slope
A measure of the steepness of a line, calculated as the 'rise over run.'
Linear growth
A pattern where a quantity increases by the same fixed amount over every equal time period.
Linear decay
A pattern where a quantity decreases by the same fixed amount over every equal time period.
Exponential
A pattern of change where the growth rate becomes ever more rapid in proportion to the growing total size.
Initial
The starting value or the amount at the very beginning (often called 'Principal' in finance).
Deposit
To put money into an account.
Annually
Occurring once every year.
Percent interest
The percentage of a principal amount charged or paid for the use of money.
Compound annually
Interest that is calculated once a year on the initial principal and also on the accumulated interest of previous years.
Compound interests
Interest calculated on the principal amount and the interest that has already been added to it.
