according to jay smooth why is it important to be systemically aware

It is important to be systemically aware because it allows individuals to recognize and challenge the pervasive nature of racism within societal structures, rather than solely addressing interpersonal incidents, which can lead to more effective activism and allyship. as well as if we focus on the successes of individual stories we forget about how racism affects society as a whole. we also cannot have a conversation about race without being systemically aware.

in what ways does the article regarding the oscars individualism racism

the article focuses on black celebrities and how they werent nominated for any awards; when the academy who votes for who gets nominated got asked why black actors/actresses did not get nominated and if the acadamy is showing racist behaviour for this there responses were “i’m not racist since i support the talent of black people in this business” “i nominated one person of colour for an award, race was the furthest thing from my mind”. this has shown to become a problem as that since they believe they voted for people of colour they are not racist. a deeper awareness of systemic racism would cover why the academy meberes are mainly white, the history of the academys members and the issue with them saying “i don’t want to be lumped into a group that is considered racist” is wrong
