autonomic plexuses
networks of nerves within thoracic and abdominopelvic cavities
contain symp post axons, parasymp pre axons, and some visceral sensory axons
cardiac plexus
includes:
sympathetic axons from cervical and thoracic trunk (quicken heart rate)
parasympathetic axons from vagus nerve (slow the heart)
pulmonary plexus
includes:
sympathetic axons from cervical and thoracic trunk (bronchodilation)
parasympathetic axons from vagus nerve (bronchoconstriction)
esophageal
includes:
sympathetic axons from cervical and thoracic trunk (decrease motility)
parasympathetic axons from vagus nerve (coordinate opening of cardiac sphincter with swallowing)
abdominal aortic plexus
consists of celiac (solar) plexus, superior mesenteric plexus, and inferior mesenteric plexus
sympathetic post axons from prevertebral ganglia
parasympathetic pre axons from vagus nerve or pelvic splanchnic nerves
innervates all abdominal and some pelvic organs
hypogastric plexus
sympathetic axons from aortic plexus and symp. trunk
parasympathetic axons from pelvic splanchnic nerves
both innervate viscera within pelvic region (rep. organs)
enteric nervous system
autonomic motor and visceral sensory neurons arranged throughout wall of GI tract
innervates smooth muscle and glands
coordinates peristalsis, movement of materials through GI tract
includes two large plexuses
submucosal plexus
myenteric plexus
para increases ENS activity, and symp inhibits ENS
