How does the law commission work?

  1. The Commission researches the area of law needing reform

  1. LC publishes a consultation paper and seeks views on reform from anyone with interest in the law under investigation

    •consultation paper suggests options for reform

  1. Commission draws up reform proposals in a research report using responses from consultation paper

    •often a draft bill attached to report which can be considered by parliament

  • many old, unnecessary, and irrelevant statutes in force

  • LC investigates whether laws still required and if not then prepares repeals bills for parl to consider
