Cold War
A state of political hostility between countries characterized by threats, propaganda, and other measures short of open warfare, primarily between the USA and the USSR.
Iron Curtain
A symbolic and physical boundary dividing Europe into two separate areas during the Cold War.
Containment
A foreign policy strategy aimed at preventing the spread of communism.
Marshall Plan
A U.S. program providing aid to Western Europe following the devastation of World War II.
Truman Doctrine
A policy established in 1947 to counter Soviet expansion during the Cold War by providing political, military, and economic assistance to all democratic nations under threat.
NATO (North Atlantic Treaty Organization)
A military alliance formed in 1949 between North America and Western European countries to provide collective security against the Soviet Union.
Warsaw Pact
A military alliance of communist nations in Eastern Europe, established in response to NATO.
Korean War
A conflict between North Korea (with support from China and the USSR) and South Korea (with support from the United Nations, primarily the USA) from 1950 to 1953.
McCarthyism
A campaign against alleged communists in the US government and other institutions, characterized by heightened fears of communist influence.
Cuban Missile Crisis
A 13-day confrontation in October 1962 between the United States and the Soviet Union over Soviet missiles deployed in Cuba.
