Upper Respiratory Infection
1) location:viral infection of the respiratory tract (nose, paranasal sinuses, throat, larynx, maybe trachea, and bronchi)
2) heat/cold: usually febrile, inflammation (burning sensation) in any or all airways → sneezing, rhinorrhea, malaise
3) Watery/profuse in the 1st days → mcuoid+purulent
4) Rhinovirus: 30-50%. More than 100 viruses can cause.

1) fever, body aches, HA, cough, sore or dry throat, malaise, lack of appetite, sniffling

2) worst 3-4 days. Can last 1-2 weeks. Takes 1-4 days to show Sx

3) CBC: Leukocyte count - auscultation of chest - HEENT - Throat culture if extreme sore throat

4) yearly vaccine - most reslve w/o Tx - Saline wash, other nasal decongestants - acetaminophin, other antipyretics

Body aches
wind cold vs wind heat? excess vs deficiency?

Body aches are more pronounced w/ wind cold excess

Wind heat will just be a little achey

There’s more of a battle in wind cold excess. No sweat, so use Ma Huang.

Nausea/Diarrhea is more common with what TCM pattern/season?

More common with summer damp heat

-diarrhea linked with dampness

Also might be w/ pre-existing deficiency + exterior attack → nausea/diarrhea

-post nasal drip can cause nausea
