Projecting your voice is key, you must be able to be heard clearly by your
audience at all times.
what is Pronunciation?
You can communicate your character by making decisions about the
pronunciation of your words.
what is pitch?
Pitch helps to convey emotion. For example, a high pitch might suggest
excitement or agitation. A lower pitch may help to show authority in your character or
the fact that they are calm.
what is placing emphasis?
Placing emphasis on key words allows your audience to appreciate
the important messages your character is communicating. It also helps to add variety to your voice work.
what is pauses?
Pauses are key in voice work. You may use pauses to build an awkward tension
between characters, or to allow the focus to be drawn towards the visuals of the play more.
what are the physical skills?
1. Movement
2. Body Language
3. Facial Expressions
4. Space and Levels
what is multi-roling?
Multi-roling is when an actor plays more than one character onstage. The differences in character are marked by changing voice, movement, gesture and
body language but the audience can clearly see that the same actor has taken on more
than one role.
What is thought tracking, and why do we use it?
Thought tracking is an effective way of getting inside a character’s mind. This enables us
to see from a character’s point of view, and to better understand their motives. It was a great way to let the audience find out key information about the thoughts andfeelings of a character that the other characters on stage didn’t know about.Often when a character is thought tracking, the other characters on stage freeze, so thatthe audience’s attention is focused solely on the words being spoken.
Why are props important?
It is an object used on stage or screen by actors during a performance or screen
production. In practical terms, a prop is considered to be anything movable or portable on a stage or a set, distinct from the actors, scenery, costumes, and electrical equipment.
What is a freeze frame?
This is where we use our bodies to create a STILL IMAGE that is often DRAMATIC and thought provoking. A freeze frame is an example of a non-naturalistic technique. Its purpose is not to be realistic but instead to communicate key ideas/moods or themes to an audience.
What makes a good mime actor?
Stays focused and in character and doesn’t look at the audience to see if they are
watching.
Able to keep their composure throughout the performance (you can feel a bit silly
miming in the background so there is a temptation to laugh!)
Clearly defined movements and gestures that the audience can clearly understand.
Thinks carefully about what they will do throughout the performance so they don’t run
out of things to do!
Clear and easy to read facial expressions.
what is narration?
A technique whereby one or more performers speak directly to the audience to tell a story, give
information or comment on the action of the scene or the motivations of characters.
what are levels?
Refers to the use of different heights, e.g. through standing or sitting, to convey
meaning on stage. They can be used to create visual interest but they can also signal status and character
relationships. For example, a more dominant character may stand towering over a vulnerable
character.
