When the verb in the main clause of a sentence expresses an e___________ or f_______________, such as hope, fear, joy, pity, or surprise, the subjunctive is required in the SUBORDINATE clause.
When the verb in the main clause of a sentence expresses an EMOTION or FEELING, such as hope, fear, joy, pity, or surprise, the subjunctive is required in the SUBORDINATE clause.

Reminder: When using expressions of will and influence, the i_______________, not the subjunctive, is used after an expression of emotion when there is NO CHANGE OF SUBJECT.
Reminder: When using expressions of will and influence, the INFINITIVE, not the subjunctive, is used after an expression of emotion when there is NO CHANGE OF SUBJECT.
For example:
Temo llegar tarde.
I'm afraid I'll arrive late. (There is no subject change in the sentence therefore the infinitive tense is used!)
VS.
Temo que mi novio llegue tarde.
I'm afraid my boyfriend will arrive late. (The subject changes from -yo to -el, therefore the subjunctive tense is used!)
