Ethics
A standard of behavior or a belief valued by an individual or group.
Utilitarianism
The ethical theory that promotes actions that maximize happiness and well-being for the majority.
Autonomy
The right of patients to make their own choices regarding their treatment.
Nonmaleficence
The ethical principle of 'do no harm', often equated with fidelity.
Mental Health Parity Act
Legislation that requires health insurance plans to provide equal coverage for mental health treatment as for physical health treatment.
Competency Issues
Determines a person's ability to understand and participate in legal proceedings.
HIPAA
Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, which protects patient privacy and the security of health information.
Apprehension by peace officer without a warrant (APOWW)
A legal process where a peace officer can apprehend an individual believed to be mentally ill without a warrant.
Holistic Nursing Care
An approach that considers all aspects of the individual in the assessment, diagnosis, and treatment process.
Cultural Competency
The ability to understand and respect each patient’s cultural experiences and how they affect their health.

A framework used to assess a patient's spiritual needs through Faith, Importance, Community, and Address.
Informed Consent
A process that ensures a patient understands the implications of their treatment options before agreeing to them.
