  • Built the great temple in Jerusalem to house the Ark of Covenant, it also gave his people a place to worship

  • Good at diplomacy (making treaties with other countries) and trade was flourishing under his rule.

Why did israel split into two kingdoms?

After Solomon's death the 12 tribes of Israelites fought amongst each other to see who would become the next king. They couldn't agree on the next king causing them to split into two separate kingdoms.

what impact did the split have on the Israelites?

The Israelites splitting into two kingdoms cause them to become weak and vulnerable allowing them to be conquered by neighboring countries.

  • King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon took citizens of Judah back to Babylon as slaves as punishment for them not paying their taxes and revolting

  • Jews were enslaved in Babylon for 50 years

  • The Persians under the leadership of King Cyrus conquered Babylon and freed the Jews. 

  • The Jews returned to Judah and rebuilt the Temple of Jerusalem (Solomon’s Temple)

what impact did the Romans have on the Israelites?

  • Judah was conquered by the Romans in 63 B.C.E. - it was renamed Judea

  • At first, the Romans allowed the Jews to practice their own religion and to govern their own affairs. However, the Jews rebelled twice against the Romans. The last rebellion resulted in the Romans destroying their temple and exiling Jews from Jewish lands. The land then became known as the Roman province of Palestine.
