The cakewalk
Highly individualized by slaves adding their own twists, shuffles, high kicks and other movements from African dance. Dancers dressed up in their finest clothes and parodied the mannerisms and dancing of the white southern elite
The Juba
Originally a plantation dance, brought from West Africa by slaves who performed it during their gatherings. The rhythm of the feet became the prime focus because drumming or other instruments were not allowed due to fears of secret codes hidden in drumming.
The ring shout
A plantation dance that is hunched low to the ground/flat feet pounding the earth/rhythmic intensity while moving counterclockwise in a circle
