Rational Functions
A ratio of two polynomials
Asymptotes
are line that the graph approaches but never actually touches, there are to main types
VA - Vertical Asymptotes
these occur when the denominator of a rational function = 0, and the numerator doesn’t.
Represents a discontinuity the function is undefined at that x-value
HA - Horizontal Asymptotes
These describe the behavior of the function as x approaches positive or negative infinity.
we determine HA’s by comparing the degrees of the numerator and denominator polynomials
p<q
always y = 0
p>q
no asymptote (can have a slant)
p=q
ratio of led coefficient y = a/b
