physicalism
everything that exists (including the mind and mental states) is either physical or supervenient upon the physical
hard behaviourism
all propositions about mental states can be reduced without loss of meaning to propositions about behaviours and bodily states
e.g. a person who has the mental state of boredom thinks about being bored and will manifest itself as outward signs of being bored
you can give a complete account of the mind purely in terms of behaviours and bodily states - the mind can be reduced to physical behaviours
e.g. a person indicating they are in pain
soft behaviourism
propositions about mental states (e.g. “i am in pain”) are propositions about behavioural dispositions
disposition - tendency to act in a certain manner under given circumstances
e.g. if you had tooth ache, you might not necessarily complain - you might hide the fact that you are suffering
e.g. a person who has the mental state of boredom that does not manifest itself as outward signs of being bored
