Self-Knowledge
A set of beliefs about oneself.
Self-Awareness
Attention directed at oneself.
Interpersonal Self
The image of the self that is conveyed to others.
Agent Self
The part of the self involved in control, including control over other people and self-control.
Independent Self-Construal
What makes the self different; typically observed in Western cultures.
Interdependent Self-Construal
What connects the self to the group; typically observed in Asian cultures.
Looking-Glass Self
A concept by Cooley that describes how our self-image is shaped by how we believe others see us.
Introspection
The process of examining the contents of one’s mind and mental states.
Self-Reference Effect
The tendency for information that relates to oneself to be remembered better.
Endowment Effect
The tendency for people to value items more highly once they own them.
Self-Esteem
An individual's overall subjective evaluation of their worth.
Self-Deception
A process where individuals deny unfavorable self-attributes while exaggerating positive ones.
Basking and Blasting
Basking refers to enhancing self-esteem by associating with successful others while blasting refers to criticizing rivals.
Positive Illusions
Inflated self-assessments where individuals see themselves in an overly favorable light.
Sociometer Theory
A theory suggesting that self-esteem measures how desirable one would be to others.
Narcissism
Excessive self-love and a selfish orientation, often linked with high self-esteem.
Overjustification Effect
The phenomenon where monetary rewards for performing a task diminish intrinsic motivation.
Appraisal Motive
The desire to learn the truth about oneself.
Self-Enhancement Motive
The desire to learn flattering things about oneself.
Consistency Motive
The desire to receive feedback that confirms one’s existing self-beliefs.
