A tool used in operant conditioning to reward successive approximations of a target behavior.
Shaping
Innate reinforcing qualities such as food, water, and sleep.
Primary Reinforcers
Learned reinforcement values that are paired with primary reinforcers, e.g., money.
Secondary Reinforcers
A reinforcement schedule where an organism receives a reinforcer every time they display a behavior.
Continuous Reinforcement
A reinforcement schedule where an organism is reinforced intermittently, not every time.
Partial Reinforcement
Reinforcement is delivered at predictable time intervals.
Fixed Interval Schedule
Reinforcement is delivered at unpredictable time intervals.
Variable Interval Schedule
Reinforcement is delivered after a predictable number of responses.
Fixed Ratio Schedule
Reinforcement is delivered after an unpredictable number of responses.
Variable Ratio Schedule
Learning that occurs without reinforcement but is not demonstrated until there is a reason to show it.
Latent Learning
Learning by watching others and then imitating their behavior.
Observational Learning
Proposed by Albert Bandura, explaining learning through observation and internal mental states.
Social Learning Theory
Observation of the model being rewarded, increasing the likelihood of imitation.
Vicarious Reinforcement
Observation of the model being punished, decreasing the likelihood of imitation.
Vicarious Punishment
Bandura's study demonstrating that children learn aggressive behaviors by observing adults.
Bobo Doll Experiment
