animals must adapt to both cold and warm climates 50-70 degrees

large amounts of rainfall 75-150 cm/year

very fertile soil = abundant plant growth ex. oak, maple, birch

temperate just means that the weather stays within a moderate range in all seasons

trees have thick bark to protect them in the winter, as well as BROAD leaves to capture sunlight, and lose their leaves to store moisture/water in the winter

dead leaves= fertilized soil

animals migrate- move south to warmer temperatures during winter then return during spring/summer

animals hibernate- eat heavily before the winter and grow thick fur coats to protect them during winter

food storage- gathering food before winter to survive winter

animals- groundhogs, black bears, beavers, opossums, gray squirrels, raccoons, deer
