Act 1, Scene 1
A street fight breaks out between Montagues and Capulets.
Prince Escalus stops the fight and warns that future violence will be punished by death.
Romeo is shown to be sad and heartbroken over Rosaline, who doesn’t love him back.
Act 1, Scene 2
Paris asks Lord Capulet for permission to marry Juliet.
Capulet says Juliet is too young and should wait.
Romeo and Benvolio learn about the Capulet party and decide to go.
Act 1, Scene 3
Lady Capulet talks to Juliet about marrying Paris.
Juliet says she’ll consider it but isn’t excited.
The Nurse is shown as loving, talkative, and close to Juliet.
Act 1, Scene 4
Romeo worries the party will lead to something bad.
Mercutio gives the “Queen Mab” speech.
Romeo decides to go to the party anyway.
Act 1, Scene 5
Romeo and Juliet meet at the Capulet party and fall in love instantly.
They kiss without knowing each other’s identities.
Tybalt recognizes Romeo and is furious.

Act 2, Scene 1
Romeo sneaks back to the Capulet orchard.
