The Normans had come to the battle on horses. The power of the horses allowed them to charge through open ground using a lance (weapon) to go through a shield stabbing an Anglo-Saxon soldier.

During the battle, what apparently happened to William?

As the shield wall was too strong for the Normans, William faked his death and commanded his soldiers to retreat. Because of that, many ranks of the Anglo-Saxon broke the shield-wall to chases the Normans down. William revealed that he was still alive. After that, the Normans began to kill the Anglo-Saxons. At the end, the William and the Normans won the Battle of Hastings.
