Ventilation
Movement of air in and out of the pulmonary mechanism.
Nasal Breathing
Breathing through the nose, which warms, moistens, and filters air.
Oral Breathing
Switching to breathing through the mouth, often due to the need for more air.
VP Port Closure
Prevents food or liquid from entering the nasal cavity during swallowing.
Nasal Regurgitation
The return of food or liquid back into the nasal cavity (nose)
Oral Preparatory Phase
Phase of swallowing where food or liquid is prepared for swallowing.
Oral Transit Phase
Phase of swallowing where the bolus is pushed from the mouth to the throat.
Pharyngeal Transport Phase
Phase where the bolus travels through the throat to reach the esophagus.
Esophageal Phase
Phase where the bolus travels through the esophagus to reach the stomach.
Boyle’s Law
Describes the relationship between space and pressure during swallowing.
Modified Barium Swallow Study (MBSS)
An X-ray technique to evaluate swallowing using barium.
Penetration
When the bolus enters the airway above the level of the vocal folds.
Aspiration
When the bolus enters the airway and goes below the level of the vocal folds.
Flexible Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing (FEES)
A technique using a flexible scope to view the larynx before and after the swallow.
Swallowing phase order
Oral Preparatory (open)
Oral transit phase (closed)
Pharyngeal phase (open)
Esophageal phase (closed)
