HSPT
High School Placement Test, an exam designed to assess the skills of students applying for admission to private high schools.
Skills-based test
A test that evaluates a candidate's abilities and skills rather than merely their knowledge or memorization of facts.
Scoring scale
A method used to evaluate or rank the performance results on the HSPT.
Divisibility
The ability of one number to be divided by another without leaving a remainder.
Prime number
A natural number greater than 1 that has no positive divisors other than 1 and itself.
Arithmetic
The branch of mathematics dealing with the properties and manipulation of numbers.
Percent
A ratio expressed as a fraction of 100, often used to describe proportions.
Exponent
A mathematical notation indicating the number of times a number is multiplied by itself.
Average (mean)
A value that represents the central or typical number in a set, calculated by dividing the sum of values by their count.
Context clues
Hints found within a sentence or paragraph that help define a difficult word or phrase.
Inference
A conclusion reached based on evidence and reasoning rather than direct statements.
Character analogy
A comparison that highlights characteristics shared between two different entities.
Possessive
Indicating ownership, typically formed in English using an apostrophe and 's'.
Apostrophe error
Common mistake in writing involving misuse of apostrophes, often with possessive nouns or contractions.
Parallelism
A grammatical and structural similarity in a series of phrases or clauses to create rhythm and balance.
Extraneous information
Details or facts that are not directly relevant to the main idea or question.
Tentative summary
A preliminary overview or outline of the main ideas covered in a passage.
Reading comprehension
The ability to understand, interpret, and analyze written text.
Emotional words
Words that convey feelings or attitudes, often used to assess the author's tone.
Optimal pace
The most effective speed at which a person can read while still comprehending the material.
