erythrocytes
red blood cells; most common type of blood cell and the vertebrate[‘s principal means of delivering oxygen to body tissues (blood glow through the circulatory system; formed in bone marrow

thrombocytes
platelets; broken off pieces of very large cells in the bone marrow called megakaryocytic; help form blood clots to stop or slow bleeding and help wounds heal

leukocytes
granular & agranular; white blood cells; a type of blood cell that plays a crucial role in the body’s immune system

granular leukocytes
neutrophils, eosinophils & basophils; a type of WBC that contains granules in the cytoplasm

neutrophils
most common WBC; a type of phagocytic WBC and a part of innate

eosinophils
a type of WBC that protects the body from parasites, allergens, foreign bacteria and outside organisms

basophils
a type of WBC that helps protect the body from allergies, pathogens and parasites; least common WBC

agranular leukocytes
lymphocytes & monocytes; a type of WBC that lacks visible granules in their cytoplasm when stained under a microscope

lymphocytes
a critical type of WBC that forms the backbone of the immune system, responsible for fighting infections, destroying abnormal cells like cancer, and contributing to long-term immune memory

monocytes
a type of WBC that originates in the bone marrow and circulates in the blood stream before migrating to tissues where it differentiates into macrophages or dendritic cells to perform immune functions

blood type groups
A, B, AB, O, Rh ±
hematocrit
a medical test that measures the percentage of RBCS in the total volume of blood; RBC/Total x100

blood count disorders
polycythemia, anemia, leukocytosis, leukopenia, thrombocytosis, thrombocytopenia
polycythemia
a condition characterized by an abnormally high number of RBCs

anemia
a condition where there is a lower-than-normal amount of RBC or hemoglobin in the blood

leukocytosis
a condition characterized by an elevated WBC

leukopenia
a condition characterized by a low number of WBC in the blood

thrombocytosis
a condition characterized by an elevated level of platelets in the blood

thrombocytopenia
a condition where the number of platelets in the blood is abnormally low
