A type of hierarchy that provided protection, connection and a way of life

What is the order of the feudal system triangle?

King, tenants-in-chief, tenants, peasants

What was the role of kings?

Became king by birth (hereditary), owned land and sometimes divided it between his best soldiers

What was the role of tenants-in-chief

Kings’ best soldiers and leading churchmen, provided loyalty, and advice, and divided their land among their best soldiers (tenants)

What was the role of the tenants?

Provided the same as tenants-in-chief in return for land, divided their land into strips that the peasants would work on

What was the role of peasants?

The poorest/largest group, some were ‘serfs’ owned by their lord/tenant. Weren’t allowed to leave the village without permission
